The Ferrari 599: A Gran Turismo Legacy of Power and Performance
Named as Evo Magazine’s Car of the year, the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano was a replacement for the 575M Maranello. Styled by Pininfarina and released in early 2006, it has an impressive top speed of over 205 mph and a 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.5 seconds.
When introduced, it had one of the few engines with output exceeding 100 horsepower per litre of displacement without the use of forced-induction supercharging or turbocharging. Needless to say, at the time it was the most powerful production Ferrari road car.
The 599 also introduced the Ferrari’s new F1 traction control system, which up until then only Ferrari’s F1 drivers had enjoyed!
It optimised traction from modulating power delivery to help with the desired vehicle trajectory. Using onboard predictive software with data collected through the pickup sensors, the optimal grip was estimated in advance by continuously monitoring the speed of both front and rear wheels and would adjust its reactions accordingly.
As well as the new F1 traction control system, Ferrari also introduced a HGTE (Handling Gran Turismo Evoluzione) upgrade package to improve the cars handling. The package included a modified set-up with stiffer springs, a rear anti-roll bar, lowered ride height and new calibration settings for the shock absorbers when the "manettino dial" - (a dial allowing for simple and quick adjustment of the electronics) - is at its sportier setting.
Along with other optional extras which included rear parking sensors, carbon fiber interior trim, Scuderia wing shields and coloured brake calipers, one of the most important options when buying a 599 was choosing the wheels. For standard models, Ferrari offered a choice of unique star-shaped pentagon wheels alongside the more popular 14-spoke monolithic challenge wheels. Impressive 20 inch 5 spoke split rims came as standard with the HGTE upgrade package.
In 2010, Ferrari presented two variants of the 599, the GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato) and the SA Aperta.
The GTO was the road-legal version of the 599XX track car and at the time Ferrari claimed it was the fastest ever road car, being able to do a lap of the Fiorano test circuit in 1 minute 24 seconds, making it one second faster than the Ferrari Enzo.
At the time, Ferrari had only ever produced two other GTO models: the 1962 250 GTO and the 1984 288 GTO with the third being the 599 GTO. It was developed to a specific performance-oriented brief and a completely new concept making it an exclusive limited edition special with limited production.
The SA Aperta was built in honour of designers Sergio Pininfarina and Andrea Pininfarina with the “SA” representing their names and “Aperta” being Italian for open as the car was designed to be enjoyed in the open air with its manually removable soft top.
It replaced the 2005 Ferrari Superamerica and is an incredibly rare car with only 80 cars built to commemorate the 80 years of Pininfarina. It uses the high-performance engine and transmission from the 599 GTO, has a lower ride height of 10mm and compared to the 599 GTB has a slightly raked windscreen along with larger cooling ducts in the new front bumper and a rear bumper in body colour.
