The Maserati Biturbo was launched as a BMW 3 Series rival, a handsome two-door coupe grand tourer powered by the world's first production twin-turbocharged engine. Two years into production, a saloon version was introduced, with a slightly different routing of the exhaust system.
The variants of this model range in power from 178 hp all the way up to 279 hp, but even the standard was enough to win the hearts of many and the Biturbo became a huge commercial success thanks to the excellent performance and luxury interior. In 1983 the more powerful Biturbo S with twin intercoolers was introduced, distinguished by its two Naca air ducts on the bonnet. Three years on, both versions were upgraded with fuel injection.
In 1988 the Biturbo received a facelift, and the original Biturbo name was dropped for “222” - meaning two-door, two-litre engine and second generation. With a slightly larger engine, this model featured a more rounded grille and bonnet, as well as different wing mirrors and rear spoiler.
This was followed by the most powerful variant of the 2 litre models, the 2.24v, powered by a new four-valve per-cylinder engine. This was the first model to use the more modern wraparound front and rear fascia’s with integrated fog lights and deep side skirts. The newer series of this model featured a catalytic converter and received Meccanica Attiva suspension on all four wheels as the standard.
The 430, which was the high-performance version of the Biturbo saloon, debuted the largest 2.8-litre version of the Biturbo engine and featured 15 inch 5-lug disc alloys as well as walnut veneered trims and inserts to compliment the luxurious leather upholstery.
Other variants included the 4.24v, a four-door offering of the 2.24v pairing the four-valve 2.0L V6 engine with the Meccanica Attiva suspension, as well as the Biturbo Spyder, a convertible version of the model. Built on the chassis of the Spider and accelerating to 60 mph from a standstill in just 4.8 seconds was the Maserati Karif, which featured a fixed notchback coupe roof.
