Porsche 996: Modern Luxury Meets Thrilling Performance

In 1997 the new 911 Carrera - successor to the Porsche 993 - was born and known internally as the Porsche 996. This newly developed model from Porsche had very little in common with the previous 911 and featured many head-turning qualities in both coupe and cabriolet form.

Equipped with power-assisted steering, traction control and 17” rims as standard, the 996 oozes class whilst providing comfort and practicality. In its first year, the car had a mechanical throttle and buyers could pick between rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, known as Carrera 2 and Carrera 4. The manual 6-speed gearbox is easy to use and has a relatively light clutch, putting the driver at ease on whichever type of journey they may encounter, from winding mountain roads to highway cruising.

The 996 is a 300 bhp premium sportscar. The flat-six engine, whilst not air-cooled - leading some to feel it's not a proper 911 - still offers amazing thrills and handling. Porsche’s new water-cooled engine was introduced with the 996, along with modern touches that increased power and torque.

Styling was changed up in 2002, including improved aerodynamics and Porsche brought back the Targa body style. The Targa design is an evolution of the classic drop top of the early 911's and delivers a light and airy 996 experience. Optional aero kits were also available that add a little hint of aggression.

Being larger than the 993 means it felt a lot more spacious and it still retained plenty of 911 charm; aside from the headlamps, you still get the class along with the enjoyment you’d find in a 911. Performance is one of the vehicle’s top qualities, the Porsche 996 reached top speeds of 174 mph and could race from 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds - pretty impressive if this was your daily!

To raise funds for charity, the experts at Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur and Style Porsche created a unique Porsche 911 Carrera GTS named “Sally Special”. This one-off creation was inspired by “Sally Carrera” - the baby blue 996 from the Pixar hit movie franchise “Cars”. The Sally Special sold for $3.6m, setting a record for a new Porsche ever sold at auction.
