The Lamborghini Urraco: A 1970s V8 Icon

The 70s brought us a time of social tensions with the oil crisis, but it can be thanked for forcing Lamborghini to create a car with a smaller engine and better emissions. The Urraco, which translates to "little bull", was introduced with a few versions including the P250 and the P300.

The Urraco was a smaller model than others from the Italian brand, competing with models such as the Porsche 911. Rather than being a range-topping sports car, this model was designed to be a more affordable alternative to the Ferrari Dino and Maserati Merak.

Featuring a 2.5 litre mid-mounted V8 engine, and mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, this small but mighty Lamborghini produced 220 horsepower.

The P300 was the later version of the Urraco, with an updated 3.0 litre engine, modified transmission and suspension which resulted in a more balanced ride. The bodywork was also upgraded with the headlights being moved further forward, and six fins rather than two on the front bonnet. The interior also had a cleaner finish, made entirely in-house at Sant-Agata.

These 4-seater Lambo GTs are popular today on the collectors market with fine examples fetching a high price tag. You will probably not see any on the road but owners tend to take them to car shows so take time to admire the refined interior and charm of this desirable iconic Lambo.
