The Porsche 924 marked a major shift in Porsche’s engineering approach. Introduced in 1976 as the successor to the 914, it became the first Porsche with a front-mounted, water-cooled engine and featured a transaxle layout that improved weight distribution. The model was initially developed by Porsche for Volkswagen but was ultimately produced in-house, with manufacturing handled at Audi’s Neckarsulm plant.

Designed with aerodynamics in mind, the 924 featured a long, sloping bonnet, pop-up headlights, and a glass tailgate. From 1983 onwards, a black rear spoiler was added to enhance airflow. The standard 924 launched with a 125-PS engine taken from the Audi 100 and modified by Porsche.

Performance improvements arrived with the 924 Turbo in 1979, which introduced additional air intakes, a NACA duct on the bonnet, and a rear spoiler while producing up to 177 PS by 1981. The 924 S followed in 1986, featuring a 2.5-litre Porsche-built engine that initially delivered 150 PS, increasing to 160 PS in 1988.

The 924’s interior was designed for comfort and practicality, featuring sports seats, a well-arranged dashboard, and a spacious boot. By the time production ended in 1988, the 924 had laid the foundation for the 944, but it remains a popular choice among collectors and enthusiasts due to its distinct styling and balanced driving dynamics.
