The Porsche 991: A Milestone in the Evolution of the 911

The Porsche 991 marked a defining moment in the 911 lineage, setting new standards in refinement and performance. Introduced in 2011 as the seventh-generation 911, it represented a significant leap forward from the 997.

Built in two phases - 991.1 (2011-2016) and 991.2 (2016-2019) - it featured a lightweight aluminium-steel composite construction, making it the first 911 to weigh less than its predecessor. Porsche engineered 90% of its components from scratch, improving aerodynamics, handling, and efficiency.

The first models launched were the Carrera and Carrera S, powered by 3.4-litre and 3.8-litre flat-six engines, respectively. The motorsport-inspired models in the Porsche 991 range pushed the boundaries of performance. The 991.1 GT3 debuted in 2013, powered by a 3.8L naturally aspirated flat-six revving to 9,000 rpm and producing 475 PS. The GT3 RS followed in 2015, featuring a 4.0L engine with 500 PS, lightweight enhancements, and improved aerodynamics.

The 991.2 generation introduced further refinements, with the GT3 gaining a 4.0L engine (500 PS) in 2017 and reintroducing a manual gearbox option. That same year, Porsche launched the GT3 Touring, offering a more understated design by replacing the fixed rear wing with an adaptive spoiler while maintaining the GT3’s high-performance capabilities.

The 991.2 GT2 RS (2017), engineered for pure speed and dominance, sits at the top of the 911 range. This beast of a car boasts a turbocharged 700-horsepower 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six and is all about speed, aggressive looks, and more speed!

It became the fastest production 911 of its time, setting a Nürburgring lap record of 6:47.3 in 2017. Top Gear journalists went on record to summarise: “A sensationally fast car, one that's also far sharper, more drivable and controllable than it has any right to be."
